What is the Supernova Academy?
The Supernova Academy is a community-based and operated consortium comprised of Supernova authors, artists, educators, musicians, business and lay people dedicated to making reading, learning, and succeeding the exciting, joyous, and profoundly progressive experiences that our young supernovas (children) need and deserve. Ultimately, it’s a place where the sky is not the limit, and where minds are in constant bloom. For youths in grades K to 12.
What is our Mission?
The Supernova Academy’s mission is to promote literacy, critical analysis, and inter-generational bonding among family and community members through regular exposure to literature, art, music, history, culture, health and wellness, the environment, and motivational and inspirational presentations.
The Programs We Operate
The Supernova Book Club – Each session of the Supernova Book Club will feature a book study that incorporates music, dance, student participation, and arts exploration. The club uses the holistic 11 R’s education strategy to teach new and reluctant readers and writers how to improve literacy skills and enjoy doing so. The 11 R’s strategy incorporates rhythm, rhyme, rap, repetition, relationship-building, routines for releasing stress and tension, brain-building exercises and recreation in the pursuit of stronger literacy skills, creative thinking and expression, along with a deeper appreciation for and love of learning. (Grades K-5). Maximum 35 students.
The Supernova Education Project – uses the holistic 11 R’s education strategy to help students close any achievement gaps they are experiencing in elementary reading, writing, math, science, and history. We can assure you that, in a relatively short period of time, the young Supernovas in our program not only will improve academically but also will develop a greater love and appreciation for higher learning. (Grades K-5). Maximum 35 students.
H.E.L.P. (Hip Hop Educational Literacy Program) – offers cutting edge supplemental reading workbooks developed around the lyrics of popular Hip Hop songs. H.E.L.P. is designed by an experienced team of educators in order to provide culturally responsive teaching materials that motivate students to read and improve literacy skills. Created out of the need to close the achievement gap, H.E.L.P. uses high interest reading workbooks that incorporate real world connections to improve literacy while bridging demographic, cultural, language, and achievement gaps. (Grades 6-12). Maximum 15 students.
Saint Gabrielle Street & Company’s Flight School – provides youths (ages 12 to 18) the opportunity to develop the personal vision, mind-set and strategy to reach their full potential. The Flight School will inspire participating youths to effectively utilize their education, community involvement, and social networks to achieve personal success, soaring far beyond the environmental constraints that often breed hopelessness and poor self-esteem. (Grades 6 – 12 – Males Only). Maximum 15 students.
